When we are looking for places to stay and partners to work with, we always try to look for something unique, cosy, stylish and family friendly. We definitely found all of these factors at the Cow Bay Homestay B&B at Cow Bay in the Daintree Rainforest.
The Cow Bay Homestay offers bed and breakfast accommodation in the World Heritage Daintree Rainforest, only two hours drive north of Cairns, in Tropical North Queensland, Australia. They are conveniently located with Cow Bay Beach on their doorstep and close to all the other attractions in the Daintree National Park. Read all about our Daintree Rainforest experience hereΒ
After a few nice emails and Lion bumping into her at his work, we partnered up with the lovely Marion, the owner of the Cow Bay Homestay B&B, who invited us to stay for 1 night and experience this tranquil hidden gem in the Daintree Rainforest.
The Cow Bay Homestay, What a beautiful house!
Marion and her husband Brian bought the house in 1996 and developed it beautifully into a cosy, bright B&B. During their renovations they used a variety of timber, sourced locally, from the property and imported some. The Cow Bay Homestay B&B is a beautifully designed timber pole home and made for the tropical climate. Here are a few of the Timbers they used for the house.
Cypress Pine: Used for the house and floors
Silky Oaks: Used for all doors and windows
Rosewood: Used for louvered doors along veranda
Bamboo: Used for floor in lounge areas
River Red Gum: Their amazing coffee table
Sally Wattle: Used for the benches in bath rooms and office
Turpentine: Used for all the poles
Blue Gum: Frame of bi fold door to deck, front steps, window frames in Queen Room 2, and the surrounding bench on the deck.
Kwila: Vanity in Queen Room 2
White Oak: Bi folds to deck top windows
Apart from the use of so many natural products, the Cow Bay Homestay B&BΒ house is powered exclusively by a modernΒ solar/battery energy systemΒ with generator back up.Β There is no main power in the area north of the Daintree River and they use solar power, batteries and a generator as back up. There are fans in the bedrooms and veranda and during the wet season environmentally sound air conditioners. Some walls are bi folded louvers which when open provide a stunning view into the tropical garden. Another great thing about the Cow Bay Homestay, especially for people like me who have a very sensitive skin, is that theyΒ use HaRa cleaning products, the leader in chemical free cleaning. Good for human and nature.
There are only 2 rooms in the Cow Bay Homestay. Both are Queen Rooms.Β The room on the West side of the house sleeps 2 persons and the room on the East side of the house sleeps 3 persons and is a bit larger than the other one. They are both cosy and with a spacious private bathroom and airconditioner. And in front of your room, there is a little living area with seats, a bed and a lounge bench. If you book only 1 room, you have the change there are other people in the other room, and you have to share the other facilities like the kitchen, the living room and the deck, but if you book the 2 rooms, you have the whole house for yourself. We had the whole house for ourselves with us 3 in the triple room and Lions parents, who visited us for 3 months,Β in the double room.
Marion and Brian live close by in their own amazing property next to the Cow Bay B&B, but you can’t see their home, and you are still very private at the Homestead. As soon as we arrived, Marion warmly welcomed us, showed us around and told enthousiasticly about the house, the beautiful garden, the history and all the things to do in the Daintree Rainforest Area. Read more about things to do in the Daintree Rainforest here.Β
Marion showed us everything we needed to know on the map, told us about the bush walk we could do that goes around the property, and made us a delicious cup of Daintree Tea.
After that we took in all the beautiful things we saw, the stunning home, the colourful garden, the interior, the deck withΒ views to the Alexandra Range and the hills of Daintree National Park, the colourful birds and butterflies. We were only here for 1 night, but could easily spend a week here, just to relax, slinging away in the hammock in the middle of the living room, cooking up a storm in the massive kitchen, taking thousands of photographs, and just taking in the views.
We still did all those things though, but in just one day π
Later in the afternoon we had a little walk around the property. The garden alone makes for a nice hike as the property is massive! In the early evening we had a look at Cow Bay Beach, which is only a 15 minutes walk away of the Cow Bay B&B. Cow Bay Beach is known as one of the most beautiful and remote beaches in the Daintree Area and you can easily spent a few hours here, walking around and playing in the sand. Be aware of the crocodiles in the Daintree National Park and never go into or very close to the ocean in this part Far North Queensland.
Cow Bay Homestay at night
When the darkness came in over the Daintree Rainforest we relaxed in the lounge chairs, sat on the deck to watch a trillion of stars and listened to the sounds of the birds and the insects. The Cow Bay Homestay B&B lights up beautifully when its dark, which is a real joy.
We enjoyed the house in al her glory, and it was wonderful to have the whole place for ourselves so it felt like a cosy home away from home with our family. After a great night sleep and a walk around the garden in the morning we enjoyed a lovely fresh breakfast made by Marion. There was bread, cereal, fresh fruit, homemade jam, juice, coffee and tea. After breakfast we decided to pack our stuff and check out as we had the whole day in front us, exploring the Daintree National Park.

The homestay looks really peaceful, more like a Zen Temple. People in cities are ready to pay a fortune in sites like these. I had the chance to stay at Corbett National Park, very similar with Daintree national park.

Hi Neha.
The Cow Bay Homestay in the Daintree Rainforest is definately one to put on your list if you love to stay in homestay’s. Having the entire place to ourselves was extra special as it really felt living there of 2 days. What was your favourite homestay so far?
Jo
Such a beautiful and comfortable homestay in the Daintree. We have been staying in many homestays recently but not in one where we had the entire house to ourselves. This sounds so much more fun.
It really is! This is by far the most unique accommodations we have stayed in as a family, the amount of space and the massive garden are just amazing. We really had that Jungle Rainforest feeling, especially at night, when we heard all the animal sounds ( safe and sound from our veranda though π )
Have a wonderfull week.
